Šibenik – a guide to Croatia

Šibenik is a must-see destination for anyone who wants to know the true culture and history of Croatia. Located in central Dalmatia, the city of Sibenik, with a population of 50,000, was founded by the native people of this land (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries),unlike many other cities that are the remains of Roman or Venetian influences in this country.

The historic city

To describe Sibenik in a few words one should say: stunning art, several hundred years of history, beautiful fortresses and charming gardens. The city is the artistic center of the region, which plays an extremely important role in Croatian tradition and culture. One of the most important buildings in the city is St. Jacob’s Cathedral, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Built over a century ago, the cathedral is an amazing combination of Gothic and Renaissance. Looking at it from all sides, you will notice dozens of reliefs and details made, like the whole building, of stone. The cathedral is crowned with a pearl dome towering over the Sibenik.

Among the monuments that you have to see when visiting this cradle of Croatian culture are also the impressive fortress of St. Nicholas and St. Anne’s Fortress, from which you can admire the old town and the river Krka.

Walking around Sibenik

Walking through Sibenik, you will often get lost in its narrow streets lined with stone plates. Every now and then you pass beautiful cafes and stalls where you can buy local wine with the aroma of pears, plums and forest fruits. In the heart of the city, on the square of the Republic of Croatia, you will find an amazing restaurant, which used to be the town hall. It is a dream place for a romantic evening. In the maze of alleys and stairs you can also find St. Lawrence’s Church and next to it a phenomenal monastery garden. Wherever we go, wonderful architecture and Croatian art will be waiting for us. In late June and early July, the city hosts the annual International Children’s Festival, during which you can see theatrical and music groups from around the world.

Šibenik is certainly a unique place on the map of Croatia. It is perfect for long walks and evenings for two. Not only is it a place full of dazzling architecture or attractions, it is also a city with a soul. The soul, which is worth knowing.
